Telephone Service

Basic telephone service in Manitoba is supplied by MTS Allstream Inc. You can buy a phone from a store or you can rent a phone from MTS. After you find a place to live, you can apply for basic phone service by calling (204) 225-5687.

 

Installation Fee

You will be charged an installation fee to receive your own telephone number and to get internet service in your home. This fee will be included on your first bill along with the first month’s service fee.

 

Your Telephone Bill

You will receive a bill every month from MTS with charges for the different services you receive. If you use a different company for your long distance calls, you will receive a separate bill from that company. You can pay your MTS phone bill by mail, at your bank, through internet banking, or at any MTS phone centre. If you also get internet service from MTS, this charge will also be on the same bill.

 

Calling Long Distance

A long distance call is a call made to communities outside our local calling area. The free local calling area includes Binscarth, Birtle, Foxwarren, Inglis, Oakburn, Russell, St. Lazare and Shoal Lake. There is information in the front of the telephone book on long distance telephone calls. It is cheaper to dial a long distance number on your own than to use an operator.

 

Save Money on Long Distance Calls

There are different long distance services in Manitoba. If you do make a lot of long distance calls to other countries you can often save money by signing up for special long distance programs offered by many companies. Phone rates vary depending on where you are calling and when you most often make calls. It is best to ask several companies about their rates before choosing one.

Internet Service

High speed internet is available from MTS (1-877-638-4255, www.mts.net) in the Town of Rossburn and Dial-up service in the rural area surrounding Rossburn. I-netlink Wireless (1-877-333-1198) and Xplornet (1-204-773-3038) offer high speed internet in Town and in the surrounding areas.
